Tips on Winter Gas Safety
Missouri Natural Gas Operators are reminding their customers about the importance of safety when it comes to natural gas and its components.
Did you know that snow and ice can cause damage to gas meters and pipes?
- With a broom or by hand, thoroughly remove snow and ice from the meter or appliance exhaust and combustion air vents. A shovel should not be used since it will harm the meter.
- Snow should not be shoveled up against the meter or exhaust and combustion air vents. After you’ve cleared the snow from your roof, double-check that your meter and vents are clear.
- Remove icicles from the eaves and gutters to prevent dripping water from splashing and freezing on the meter or vent pipes. If you are unable to safely remove the snow and ice, contact a competent professional service company.
- Do not kick your gas meter to break or clear ice.
- Make a way to the meter so that employees of your natural gas service provider or emergency responders may access it.
- Install carbon monoxide detectors on each floor of your home and ensure they are operational.
